Wind energy testing site

Project info

Over several years, the ZSW has built a unique wind energy research testing site on the edge of the Swabian Alb. Here, research is being conducted into how wind turbines can be made even more powerful, quieter, and more durable. The turbines are equipped with sensors from the foundation to the rotors. Four measurement masts are located on the site to record wind and weather data, and there are additional measuring systems on the ground. The ZSW is also conducting research into nature conservation around the test field: The flight movements of birds, bats, and insects are recorded with sensors, and the specially developed bird recorder uses cameras to record the area around the turbines and can stop the turbines' rotors.
For the testing site, the ZSW researchers and engineers refurbished old wind turbines. I photographed the entire process, from the refurbishment of the components to the construction and opening of the test field.
